World Community Grid News - November 19, 2008
Contributed by Stefan Ledwina

November 19, 2008 Version 6.2 of the World Community Grid BOINC software is now available

The major enhancements of the 6.2.28 client over the 5.10.45 client are as follows:

  • The screen saver will display the graphics even if the screen saver has the password protected box checked
  • There are several changes to improve the experience of running the software on Microsoft Vista
  • A new preference is available to allow you to set the max percent of available processors to use. This field defaults to 100%. The number of processors used is the lesser of either this new value or the value of 'max number of processors' previously set on the device profile. You can access your device profiles here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do
  • The latest version of libCurl is being used. This increases the number of proxies that are supported automatically
  • The latest version of OpenSSL is being used
  • A message is displayed if you are already connected to World Community Grid and you attempt to 'Add Project'. This is intended to help users understand the difference between joining a different BOINC project vs changing their participation for the projects available at World Community Grid
  • The research applications will not start running until two minutes after BOINC has started. This will help some computers start up faster.
Members can now set the maximum resource consumption allowed by the graphics. This field is set for a specific device profile http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/device/viewProfiles.do . The graphics will use at most X% of cpu time or run at a rate of at most Y frames per second. By default the graphics use at most 5% of cpu time and 7 frames per second.
  • If the user installing the software is a new user or if they have never modified the cc_config.xml, then:
    • The software will use www.ibm.com in order to check if the BOINC client is connected to the internet. During the initial connection process, it will suggest that if the client cannot connect to the project or to ibm.com, then it will provide a list of things to check
    • The BOINC software will now contact World Community Grid to find out if a new version is available rather than contacting the BOINC servers. This gives us control of when the message about a new version being available appears on members messages log.

November 19, 2008 Application Optimizations 2

I just implemented another round of optimizations, and now on the AMD Linux cluster it's running 8x-9x faster (almost 4 times as fast as the previous version). The machine I'm testing on is really high end, so I'm hoping that older archiectures will get even more improvement from this. Also, we're still on schedule to put the new app on the server this afternoon and start with the new workunits.

Application optimizations
November 18, 2008

I've just finished implementing a bunch of optimizations suggested by our users in the new milkyway application (we're hoping to roll it out on wednesday). On our AMD Linux cluster it's running about 2-3x faster. I'm currently getting some numbers for OSX and Dave is working on some numbers for windows. We should be releasing the code wednesday when we put the app on our server.

We are postponing the server update until tomorrow because it requires quite a bit more work than originally thought.

Nov 17, 2008 Results from previous days

Due to the excessive load on the back-end we had to remove the data about all the results that have been crunched in the past two weeks; we are currently working on the solution that will both enable storing the historical data and will not create such a load on our server.
